Linda and I just returned from a pretty cool evening up at the OWO where they had a VIP evening 'celebration' that included some pretty great craft beers and a Taco 'truck' that supplied some very good eats. Plus I ran into a couple of characters from the forum here that I haven't seen in quite a awhile and it was really nice reconnecting with them too.
Today was the start of their annual Paddle Expo and it continues through Sunday.
I was told that up to 20 different vendors will be there tomorrow and from some of those that stuck around tonight, it should be a great place to visit.
In fact, I am going back tomorrow two pick up some hiking boots from Keen, and their rep was there tonight and gave me a great 'tutorial' on how to really accurately fit a pair of boots. He will also be there tomorrow so if I forget, I'll go get him to assist me!
Also, Zac Brown's (yes, THAT Zac Brown) Southern Grind crew was up there demonstrating his line of superbly crafted knives, throwing axes and a machete that is absolutely awesome.
I already own one, called the Bad Monkey, and of all the knives I have it is by far the nicest one I have ever owned. Carbon fiber, a blade you can shave with plus it has a 4 inch blade with a little 'hook' for lack a better word that allows you, if needed, to draw it out of your pocket extremely quickly and the hookie thing catches on the edge of your pocket so when it leaves your pocket it is already open and ready for business. A true work of art that is as bad as it's name implies, Bad Monkey. If Linda isn't looking too closely tomorrow, a smaller knife, called the Spider Monkey may find a place deep in one of my pockets too.
It sounds like it will be raining in the morning, so being out in a kayak or open boat doesn't sound like a lot of fun to me so I intend to head back up there in the morning to check out the other vendors and pick up a new pair of Keens (my 10 year old ones are pretty much worn out and have lost their waterproof-ness...so it's time to replace them.
I am pretty sure the Warner paddle rep will be there too (she's there every year) and if you are in need of a new paddle why not let her fit you exactly for a new Werner? I wasn't told who all the other vendors will be but I do know a Jackson rep, a Hobie rep and a Perception rep will be there to show you their boats....and I was blown away by all the boats now that pedal if you wish to go that route.
And remember, they will always plop any boat they have into their indoor pool to give you an idea of it's stability and if you ask really nicely, I am pretty sure they will crank up their wave generator so you can get an idea of how it paddles in a rough 'current'. Just remember to leave your cell phone on the repair desk, NOT in you pocket. Enough said.
I hope to see some of you up there..it should be a fun day with some pretty good deals here and there too and not only in kayaks and gear but they still carry some pretty nice clothing up there too for you and you significant other.
Cheers!
Pat
And if nothing else, check out those Southern Grind knives. I'll tell you right now they are not cheap....but man, are they a beautiful piece of work. Once you register them on their website, they will sharpen them and repair them if necessary for you and they will even allow you to visit their manufacturing facility in Peachtree City where they will resharpen your knife for you while they give you a tour of the place (by appointment, though). That's on my list of things to do this summer, for sure. And if you are a Walking Dead fan, their rep told me the 'headquarters' for that TV show and a store that sells all sorts of Walking Dead swag is only 10 minutes from their factory. Plus, I guess there are always zombies walking around down in that area so that could be a fun day too! :-)
